history

government music began as a radio show on WLUW, 88.7fm in chicago on September 4th, 1998. every friday night, first from 10pm - 2am then from 11pm - 2am, we broadcast punk, hardcore, and a wee bit of metal. we had a shitload of bands perform live (highlights include rise against, arma angelus, fourth rotor, littleman complex, to name a few) and, in general, had a pretty kick ass time. somewhere along the way justin #2 became part of the radio show.

a loyal listener named Paul liked this one band whose cd we played - ambition mission - so much that he lent/gave us the money to release their discography - the birth of government music the label.

in early 2002 i realized that i no longer had time to continue the radio show and so i handed the reigns over to justin #2. in september 2002 justin #2 left the gm family after 4 cd's and 2 years of the radio show. the show continues, at its same time slot on WLUW, only now it is called "underground communique". irregardless of what it is called, the friday night punk show on WLUW has been on the air for more than 4 years, making it one of the longest running punk shows to remain in the same time slot on the same station.

in october 2002, i decided that doing a zine was about the only thing left to try and so we began work on the first issue of government music. issue #1 will hit the streets in december 2002.
